Two men charged with murder

Kenedy man gunned down in the street on Christmas morning

By Joe Baker

Police say two local men shot and killed a Kenedy man at a location on Stewart Street in Kenedy in the early morning hours of Christmas Day.

According to Kenedy Police Chief Duane DuBose, evidence gathered at the scene indicates that Gilbert Benavides, 27, was gunned down by James Pacheco, 36, of Karnes City and Jesse Salinas, 28, a Kenedy resident.

The Karnes County Sheriff’s Office received information about the shooting at about 5 a.m. on the morning of Thursday, Dec. 25 and a Kenedy police officer was immediately dispatched to the scene.

DuBose said that the officer, upon arrival, observed Benavides lying on the roadway. Upon further observation, the officer noticed that Benavides had several visible gunshot wounds.

Benavides was immediately transported to Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

"Through information gained at the scene, we were able to identify two suspects," DuBose said. "Arrest warrants were issued that day and the individuals turned themselves in on Sunday, Dec. 28."

Both men were charged with murder in the first degree and bond was set at $750,000 for each man. Both are still in custody at the Karnes County jail.

"The two individuals have had some past history – hostilities toward each other and unfortunately, apparently, it boiled over on that morning," DuBose said. "From what we were able to find out, there were some past — not only verbal, but also physical altercations between the three subjects."

Recent donations help Karnes City Volunteer Fire Department reach goal of new fire engine purchase

By Venessa Bourne

The Karnes City Volunteer Fire Department plans to purchase a new pumper fire engine.

Fire Chief Charles Malik said that after much research they have found the new pumper truck to cost about $299,000. He says this is a much needed investment for the department, allowing them to be well equipped when dealing with local fires.

The Texas Commission on Fire Protection donated $5,500 towards the new fire truck. Mrs. Dorothy McCarroll also answered the call for financial backing, donating $40,000 towards the cause.

The department also received a grant from the M.G. and Lillie A. Johnson Foundation in the amount of $50,000. The remainder of the cost of the new fire truck will have to be financed through a loan or loans.

All black birds not bad birds

Editor’s note: A reader saw this story in the Sequoyah County Times — a newspaper that serves Sequoyah County, Oklahoma — and he thought it would be of interest to Karnes County readers, as well. Dr. Gary Cox, who lives in Sallisaw, Okalhoma, also owns property in Karnes County, Texas, and occasionally visits this area.

Not all black birds are not bad birds.

For instance, Gomer – a black-headed vulture raised by veterinarian Dr. Gary Cox of Sallisaw – is one of the most intelligent animals Cox said he has ever rehabilitated.

The white chick, which grew into Gomer "Like in Gomer Pyle," was brought to Cox last spring.

"He was probably blown out of the nest," Cox said. A licensed wildlife rehabilitator, Cox has raised many abandoned or lost chicks, including two robins and several others this spring, not to mention squirrels, possums, skunks, deer, and other wild creatures who have survived due to Cox’s care.

But he says of Gomer, "I’ve never had an animal like this one before."

Gomer, Cox believes, thinks he’s a dog.
